About: |
Over the years I have found, that one of the most difficult things for some people is to understand that not everyone thinks the same way they do. They insist that everyone thinks like they do, because anything else just seems impossible to them. They simply cannot grasp the fact that other people have other priorities, other goals and other needs than themselves. Examples: “I’m a man, and I like women with big boobs” => “All men like women with big boobs”. “I don’t like to be alone. It makes me feel abandoned” => “Nobody likes to be alone”.
It may seem like a fairly innocent thing and nothing serious when you look at the big picture (but nothing is serious when you look at the big picture). I personally find it both funny and sad. Funny when I look at people so persistently claiming facts about other people. Sad when I see the consequence of such claims. It’s often when you see somebody perform a certain gesture you make an assumption about that person. The most common one is when a guy buys a girl a drink; you assume it’s because he’s interested in getting her drunk so that he can take advantage of her. (It might also be because he’s a gentleman, but how many people make that assumption?). Or let’s say a woman is tripping on the sidewalk a Saturday evening; you assume she’s drunk. Or you see a guy with blood on his clothes; you assume he’s a violent man who’s been in a fight. (It might also be because he just helped someone involved in an accident, but how many people make that assumption?).
Now, when you assume something about another person, you often go and tell other people about your assumption. These people mostly believe what you assume, and within a few minutes you have put a label on this person. Because of that, these assumptions often result in people being scared of performing certain actions. They’re afraid of what other people will think of them.
I recently saw a documentary about the differences between men and women. In an experiment they had placed a little girl on the street, and put a camera on her to see how many men vs. women who’d stop to ask the little girl if she was alright. Needless to say not many men stopped, but I don’t have to tell you the reason either, do I?
We are imprisoning ourselves when we make assumptions – both ways. “Some guy assumed something about me when I did this gesture” => “All people assume this about me if I do this gesture”. We restrict our own behaviour in order to avoid conflicts and confrontations.
And now comes the really scary part: When you assume something about somebody, you’re really only revealing your own way of thinking. When you assume something about somebody based on a certain gesture they do, you’re only revealing what your own reasons would be for doing that very gesture.
Don’t you think it’s about time you stopped assuming so damn much? Maybe it’s time to learn that you are the only one thinking like you. No one else has your twisted perspective on things.
But then again, maybe all of this is merely my own assumption… |
